第三章————DULCE

Jill在家————

?

The Augmented Eye————?

DANGER/U/————————?

Jill:*

Jill: *yawn* G'evening.

?

Dana: Hey, Jill! Gil is in the back sorting an ingredients shipment and I've got things to do, the dog's in charge, okay? Bye!

?

Jill:……什么?

Jill: ...what?

?

Jill:

Jill: Wait, the dog what?!

?

Rad Shiba:

Rad Shiba: Okay, first order: pet me.

pet♂me

Jill:

Jill: No.

?

Rad Shiba:

Rad Shiba: Pet me.

?

Jill:

Jill: No.

?

Rad Shiba:

Rad Shiba: I'm in charge and I want you to pet me.

?

Jill:……

Jill: ...

?

Jill: Time to mix drinks and change lives.

?

Rad Shiba:嘿,J!

Rad Shiba: Hey J!

?

Jill:

Jill: Won't pet you.

?

Rad Shiba:

Rad Shiba: You'll pet me sooner or later. They all do.

?

Jill:

Jill: Won't!

?

Rad Shiba:會摸的!(Will)

Rad Shiba: Will!

?

Gillian:

Gillian: You called?

?

Jill: He said will, not Gil.

?

Gillian:啊——

Gillian: Aaaaah.

?

Gillian:……

Gillian: ...

?

Gillian: Who the hell is Will?

?

Jill:

Jill: Nobody!

?

Gillian: Don't be rude with poor Will!

?

Jill: There's no Will!

?

Rad Shiba:

Rad Shiba: Do you need me to psyche you up then?

?

Jill:

Jill: SHUT UUUUP!

?

Gillian:誰閉嘴?我還是Will?

Gillian: Who? Me or Will?

Jill: AAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!

?

Jill:

Jill: You go back to whatever you were doing.

?

Gillian:……

Gillian: ...alright.

?

Jill: 站住!

Jill: And you... standby!

?

Rad Shiba:

Rad Shiba: Only if you pet me.

?

Jill:滾!

Jill: GO!

?

Jill:……

Jill: ...

?

Jill:……

Jill: ...the fu?【屏~蔽~_(:з」∠)_】??k just happened?

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: Well, aren't we spirited today?

?

Valha—……

Jill: Welcome to Valha-...

?

Jill:Virgilio?

Jill: Virgilio?

?

Virgilio: Why do you sound so weirded out?

Jill:

Jill: You didn't show up with a... bombastic soliloquy.

?

Virgilio: Well, putting up an act can be tiring, you know?

?

Jill:

Jill: So it's all an act, then?

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: Wasn't it obvious?

?

Jill:

Jill: I guess...

?

Virgilio: Would you mind getting me a Bleeding Jane?

?

Jill:好的。

Jill: Sure.

?【Bleeding?Jane】

Jill:Bleeding Jane

Jill: A Bleeding Jane.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: Yes, this is just the thing.

Jill:請用。

Jill: Here.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: This isn't a Bleeding Jane.

?

Jill: Uh... actually my name is Jane and I'm bleeding, so... um...

?

Virgilio: Hahaha! You can be quite creative with your excuses, Miss Bartender.

?

Jill: So... tired of putting on an act. Care to explain?

?

Virgilio: It's a long story. And I'd honestly rather not talk about it right now.

?

Jill:

Jill: Fair enough. What made you change your mind, though?

?

Virgilio: Well, for one thing, it's safer for me now. The pompous buffoon act was mostly a way to avoid raising suspicion.

?

Jill: Safer? There's a word that's been losing meaning lately.

?

Jill:

Jill: Wait... THAT was your way of avoiding suspicion?

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: Yes.

?

Jill:……

Jill: ...you do know how weird that sounds, right?

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: It sounds weird?

?

Jill: You try not to raise suspicion, but you act in a bombastic manner that screams you're there.

?

Virgilio: And everyone dismisses the fool as a buffoon and moves on.

?

Jill:……

Jill: ...

?

Jill:……誒?

Jill: ...eh?

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: I mean, you might be right if I were talking about hiding myself.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: But I'm avoiding certain... crowds of people.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: Yes, my behaviour might call everyone's attention.

?

Virgilio: But then everyone just decides I'm harmless and disregards me.

?

Virgilio: And depending on how erratic my actions are, I become harder to read.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: Giving me yet another layer of enigma.

?

Jill:我……

Jill: I...

?

Jill:哈。

Jill: Huh.

?

Jill:

Jill: Well, congrats. No offense, but I fell right into your plan.

?

Jill:

Jill: I just dismissed your actions as those of a fool and moved on.

?

Jill:

Jill: You completely fooled me.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: Thanks.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: Say, can you give me something spicy?

?

Jill:好的。

Jill: Sure.

Jill:請用。

Jill: Here.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: Aren't you fascinated by spiciness?

?

Virgilio: What's spicy for humans might not be spicy for other animals.

?

Virgilio: Hell, what's toxic for us might not be for other creatures.

?

Virgilio: Do you like spicy things, bartender?

?

Jill:

Jill: I don't mind them, I guess. But I'm not really a fan.

?

Virgilio: That neutral stance is actually weird to come across.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: Everyone either loves spicy things or hates them with passion.

?

Jill:

Jill: Do you like it?

?

Virgilio: Lots. Not only in regards to painfully spicy things, but also the way mild or slight spice adds to a meal.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: I've always had this dream of opening a curry stand.

?

Virgilio: As things are, I might actually pursue that dream.

?

Jill: Let me know if you do. I haven't had curry in ages now.

Jill:請用。

Jill: Here.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: Not spicy enough.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: I hate it when things aren't spicy enough.

?

Jill:

Jill: It burns the tongue a bit, though.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: Not the same thing.

Virgilio: Hey, bartender...

?

Jill:叫Jill就好。

Jill: Call me Jill.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: I wanted to apologize.

?

Jill:

Jill: Hm?

?

Virgilio: You put up with me all this time without lashing out. I should apologize for my behaviour, and thank you at that.

Jill: Don't worry. I actually feel like I was too rude to you last time you came.

?

Jill:

Jill: Granted, you came at a really bad time, but...

?

Jill: I should be the one apologizing. You're a client after all.

?

Virgilio: Well, don't. I'm actually surprised that nobody else had violently lashed out at me yet.

?

Jill:

Jill: You're making me curious as to who you really are though.

?

Jill:Virgilio

Jill: Is Virgilio even your real name?

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: It might be, it might not.

?

Jill:……

Jill: ...sometimes I wonder if I'm a magnet for people who hide their identities and sordid pasts.

?

Jill:Gil,Jamie,

Jill: Gil, Jamie, you...

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: Um... did you say something?

?

Jill:

Jill: Just rambling. Pay me no mind.

Jill: So, tell me. Why a steampunk museum?

?

Virgilio: I've always liked the steampunk aesthetic. And that whole art movement is fascinating.

?

Virgilio: It's always interesting to see how certain currents mirror certain cultures.

?

Virgilio: And in this case, how steampunk takes from Victorian culture.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: Non-Victorian examples are too few and far between.

?

Jill:

Jill: Interesting.

?

Virgilio:……

Virgilio: ...I also needed a job and the director just so happened to be a friend of mine.

?

Jill: Of course.

?

Jill: Now that I think about it, how did you find this bar?

?

Virgilio: I was... avoiding some chaps and came to this alley.

?

Jill:

Jill: Huh... again.

?

Virgilio:“也是”?

Virgilio: "Again"?

?

Jill: In my time here, I've heard "avoided people and ended up here" enough times to make me believe...

?

Jill:

Jill: That the original owner built the bar here thinking about the runaway public.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: You make me sound like a criminal.

?

Jill:

Jill: You're not helping.

?

Jill:

Jill: The expression "runaway" doesn't just mean people escaping the law though.

?

Jill:

Jill: We've had people avoiding stalkers or solicitors.

?

Jill: I've seen people more shocked by an insistent salesman than a shady figure.

?

Jill:

Jill: Maybe because the salesman is a more active predator? I don't know.

?

Jill: A troublesome part of the city right near the shopping district.

?

Jill:

Jill: Let them know there's a bar and they'll come.

?

Jill:……

Jill: ...sorry. I should stop rambling to myself so much.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: I don't mind it.

?

Virgilio:……

Virgilio: ...do you think I'm sort of criminal, though?

?

Jill:

Jill: Like I said: you're not helping.

?

Jill: But for all I know... you might be the buffoon I've seen the other days.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: In any case, can I get something bitter here?

?

Jill:

Jill: On it.

Jill:請用。

Jill: Here.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: This works.

?

Virgilio: Do you like coffee, Miss Bartender?

?

Jill: As weird as it may sound from a smoking bartender... no, I don't.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: Well, I get it. It's not for everyone.

Jill:

Jill: Here you are.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: This... isn't bitter.

?

Jill: Um... because you're the bitter one now!

?

Jill:……

Jill: ...

?

Jill:

Jill: Sorry.

?

Virgilio: Don't be. It wouldn't surprise me if it became force of habit due to my weird orders before.

?【Stella

Cat Boomer……

Virgilio: That Cat Boomer the other day...

?

Jill:

Jill: What about her? Still scared of her?

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: Not really, but she looks so familiar...

?

Jill: Maybe you're mixing her up with another Cat Boomer?

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: No, that's not it...

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: It's like the bandaged girl last time.

?

Virgilio: Even with the bandages, there's just something really familiar about her.

?

Jill:

Jill: Maybe you need to stop thinking about it.

?

Jill: Answers usually come to you when you stop stressing out.

Virgilio:

Virgilio: You might be right.

Virgilio:

Virgilio: That bandaged girl that came here last time...

?

Jill:

Jill: What about her?

?

Virgilio: I feel like I've met her before. I've been thinking a lot, but can't put my finger on it.

?

Jill:

Jill: Maybe you need to stop thinking about it.

?

Jill: Answers usually come to you when you stop stressing out.

?

Virgilio:

Virgilio: You might be right.

?

Virgilio: Well, I leave you for now, bartender. Thanks for everything.

?

Jill:

Jill: Please come again.

?

Jill: Welcome to Valhalla.

?

Jill:

Jill: Oh, hello, Mister Detective.

?

Art:……

Art: ...

?

Jill: (And here we are, another mute person wandering into the bar.)

?

Jill:

Jill: Anything I can get you?

?

Art:Gut Punch。

Art: Gut Punch.

?

Jill:好的。

Jill: Okay.

?【Gut Punch】

Jill:請用。

Jill: Here.

?

Art:

Art: Oh, you got it right.

Jill:請用。

Jill: Here.

?

Art:

Art: Alright! Free drink!

?

Jill:

Jill: So, what's up now?

?

Art: A bit of holiday blues, you could say.

?

Jill: So you celebrate Mega Christmas?

?

Art: Why wouldn't I?

?

Jill: You looked more like a Festivus kind of guy.

?

Art:

Art: Why does everyone keep saying that?!

?

Jill: Well, Festivus IS a celebration going against the capitalist madness that is Mega Christmas.

?

Jill: (And you know... cheapskate.)

?

Art:

Art: If you have something to say, say it.

?

Jill: I'll refrain.

?

Jill: Although now that I think about it, "holiday blues" is not really tied to a specific celebration.

?

Jill: Just the season.

?

Art:

Art: A season of consumerist craze.

?

Art: Mega Christmas is just a mockery of what the real Christmas once was.

?

Art: I mean, the season has slowly become enslaved to the corporations over time.

?

Art: "Holiday spirit" can only be manipulated so much.

?

Art: But then came that Turbo Male guy. He started a yearly tradition of dressing up like Santa in the ring.

?

Jill:Turbo Male?

Jill: Turbo Male? That can't be his ring name.

?

Art:

Art: It is.

?

Jill:

Jill: Really? Such a tacky name was accepted?

?

Chris Max。

Art: His partner was Buster Master and his rival was Dr. Chris Max. Tacky names were not a problem.

?

Jill: I mean, I knew there was a wrestler that dressed as Santa every year.

?

Jill: I also knew that the guy became insanely popular and the stunt got out of control.

?

Jill: And, of course, that's the part everyone sings about.

?

Jill: Santa became Nega Santa thanks to the Redmond Family.

?

Jill: Nega Santa sees the error of his ways and becomes the mighty Mega Santa, renaming the holiday Mega Christmas.

?

Art: And then every company jumped on the bandwagon and Christmas was Mega Christmas before anyone noticed.

?

Jill: So you're telling me that the guy who somehow managed to rename the holiday...

?

Jill: Went by the ring name "Turbo Male"?

?

Art:

Art: Yup.

?

Jill:……

Jill: ...

?

Jill: That makes the whole holiday sound like a joke.

?

Art: The holiday IS a joke.

?

Jill: And you're telling me you don't celebrate Festivus?

?

Art:*

Art: *sigh* No, I don't.

?

Art: Do you know what kind of people celebrate Festivus?

?

Art: The kind that's so lame and bland that they can only talk about how they're better because they celebrate Festivus.

?

Art: Like those jerks who only eat Nuke and think they're better than everyone else.

?

Jill:

Jill: I see...

?

Jill:

Jill: Anything else I can get you?

?

Art: Get me a Fringe Weaver, will you?

?

Jill:好的。

Jill: Sure.

?【Fringe Weaver】

Jill:請用。

Jill: Here.

?

Art:

Art: Right, thanks.

Jill:

Jill: Here you are.

?

Art:

Art: Hah! Thanks a lot.

?

Jill: (I wonder if he'd be happy if I gave him thinner just because it's wrong and thus free?)

Jill: Okay, we both know it's not holiday blues. Why are you so down?

?

Art:

Art: Why so interested? Are you hitting on me?

?

Jill:

Jill: Nah, just bored.

?

Jill: Besides, you could be my dad. I'd never hit on you.

?

Art:

Art: You'd be surprised by the amount of girls that are into older men.

?

Jill:

Jill: Let me rephrase it: I'd never hit on you. Period.

?

Art: Whatever, I'm married, anyway.

?

Art:

Art: So you wanna know why I'm feeling down?

?

Jill:

Jill: If you don't want to tell me, it's okay.

?

Art:

Art: Nah, there's no problem.

?

Art:

Art: Well, you see. I found the girl I was looking for...

?

Art:……

Art: ...in her last moments.

?

Jill:呃……真的?

Jill: Huh... really?

?

Art: I followed her tracks and finally found her. Although to be fair, it's more like she stopped trying to cover them.

?

Art: She was just sitting in a room near some more corpses. From what I gathered later, seems it was some drug lab.

?

Art: She passed herself off as a prostitute, and then proceeded to kill everyone inside.

?

Art: When I found her, she was drugged to hell and back.

?

Art: According to what little I could get out of her, she was dying.

?

Art: Seems the same rejection she used to kill her targets was also killing her too.

?

Jill: You mentioned she caused a Nanomachine Rejection of sorts, right?

?

Jill: So I'm guessing the city's nanomachines seeped into her body, causing a reaction.

?

Art: As a psycho-for-hire, you'd think she'd have had the foresight to think about that before coming into the city.

?

Art: But anyway, I had a job to do, so I delivered her letter.

?

Art:……

Art: ...only for her to tear it apart without reading it.

?

Jill:

Jill: Must've been frustrating, huh?

?

Jill: I mean, all that work for her to rip it to pieces.

?

Art: I thought something like that might happen.

?

Art: To be honest, at that point, I was really just doing it for my own sense of peace.

?

Jill:

Jill: Why tear the letter, though?

?

Art:

Art: apparently, the guy wasn't exactly the best father out there.

?

Art: She was born for experimental purposes. A living guinea pig for her father's condition.

?

Art: He was literally going to use her to test any treatment, no matter how unorthodox.

?

Art: She was experimented upon from an early age. And when she found out what her blood was capable of, she just... snapped.

?

Art: In her own words, "I didn't have to take shit from anyone anymore, not even my 'father'".

?

Art: So she ran away, came to the city. Became a gun for hire...

?

Art: Got trapped in that bank. Then, the rejection started to kick in...

?

Jill:

Jill: Tough stuff.

?

Art: It hit me hard, you know? I kinda saw my own daughter in her at that moment.

?

Art:

Art: The anger she bore against this old man...

?

Art: I've seen it before. Many times while my daughter was a teen.

?

Jill:真的?

Jill: Really?

?

Art: She... my daughter was born as a boy. And back then, spent all her time angry.

?

Art: I had a short fuse, so I lost control with her more often than not.

?

Art:

Art: I yelled at her, she yelled at me...

?

Jill:……

Jill: ...

?

Art: When she turned 11, she started her transition process. Her behaviour changed a lot.

?

Art: She was calmer, friendlier... but my relationship with her was already fractured.

?

Art: It wasn't until a couple of years ago that she decided to give me a second chance.

?

Art: I've been doing my best to make amends, but I still remember the anger on her face.

?

Art: And to see that girl, in her death throes, with that same look...

?

Art:……

Art: ...

?

Jill:

Jill: Maybe you shouldn't be here then.

?

Art:

Art: Huh?

?

Jill: Maybe you should be with your daughter, preventing that stuff from ever happening again.

?

Jill: You finished your job. Take your lesson to heart and go spend time with her.

?

Jill:

Jill: Not everyone gets second chances, so don't waste it.

?

Art: Yeah, I'll do that. Thanks for everything, bartender.

?

Jill: (Does that count as scaring a client off? Eh...)

Jill:

Jill: So, any issues with the city lately? What's the word on the street?

?

Art: Shouldn't I be asking that?

?

Art:

Art: There's nothing new, really.

?

Art: The lynchings of White Knights stopped, so there's that.

?

Jill:真的?

Jill: Really?

?

Art: Something about the armor. I haven't gotten much on that one yet.

?

Art: All in all, the madness following the attack on the bank seems to have settled down a bit.

?

Jill:

Jill: That's good to hear.

?

Jill: Have any other details about the attack emerged yet?

?

Art: All records of whatever happened there have been long deleted.

?

Art: Security cams, system logs... everything was wiped.

?

Art: Whatever happened there, it's become even more of a mystery now.

?

Jill: (I wonder if Sei plans on testifying.)

?

Jill:(……

Jill: (...does anyone know if Sei went there in the first place?)

?

Jill: (Maybe the wiping of everything actually protects her somehow.)

?

Art: Hey, bartender. You okay?

?

Jill:

Jill: Sorry, got distracted.

?

Art:

Art: There's not much to say, really.

?

Art:

Art: There's the odd silly rumor here and there.

?

Art: Like the vending machines' tasers malfunctioning and applying more strength.

?

Art: Or that the writer of The Last Rain In The World is actually living here as a brain in a jar.

Art:

Art: But those are the kind of rumors you hear from crackheads.

?

Art: Crackheads might hold that one last piece of info you need, but you also hear crap like that.

?

Jill:

Jill: I see.

?

Art: Anyway, I'm leaving. Happy New Year, bartender.

Jill:

Jill: Please come again.

?

Jill:

Jill: Okay then... um...

?

Jill:Bo—……

Jill: Bo-... no, wait. She's out.

?

Jill:GIL!

Jill: GIL! YOU THERE?

?

Gillian:

Gillian: Yeah. Taking your break?

?

Jill:

Jill: Let me know if someone comes in.
