今天，我們就來說說“grill”(燒烤)。

英語的“grill”來自法語，在法語里有兩個同源詞：陽性的“un gril”和陰性的“une grille”。

首先，陽性的“gril” 是燒烤用的烤爐 (grilloir)，常可譯為英語的“grill”:

Je préfère les steaks cuits sur le gril.
I prefer steak cooked on the grill.
我喜歡燒烤的牛排。

?“燒烤”的食物一般都有一道道的焦痕吧？那是金屬柵格的“烙印”。其實(shí)“grill”這個詞的本義就是“柵欄，籬笆”(railings, fence), 它來自拉丁語的“cratis”，意為“藤條編織”（wickerwork）。

法語陰性名詞“grille”就保留了“柵欄，籬笆”等意義，也可譯為英語的“grille”：
