?50 Lesson 8 - Speedpainting Part 5 - Painting 3 - Angelic Perspective
P50 - 00:00?
?Welcome to speed painting and perspective.?
Now when it comes to speed painting in perspective, I always find It the most helpful to have a strong photobase.?
In this case I asked one of my friends who studied abroad in Europe to send me some of his photos. So that every single photo that I'm using in this photo bash is actually photos from his collection that he gave me full permission to use.?
Of course, we start off with perspective grids no matter what.?
And for this piece I'm doing an arrival shot hype of composition, to focus mainly on the environment. To demonstrate to you a perspective exterior.?
Everything that you're seeing me do right now of distorting and transforming all of these buildings is all stuff that you've seen me do.?
And this Cinderella photo bach piece. In this case, the same rules apply. Just make sure that all of your photos are here to the grids. ?
Now to make sure that I can complete this painting within like two to three hours, especially for things as complex as buildings I and joy pasting these buildings First of all, of course, accordingly with the right perspective and then going on Top and simply painting and lassoing tooling and filling in the colors that way.?
One thing i'd like to know. Those since this piece does use photographs more heavily, I intentionally used photographs that.?
number one have been given to me. And I have full permission to use. And number two are all of the same location. So that the architecture is accurate isn't super off.?
We can't exactly have a Roman coliseum in an Asian temple next to each other.?
for personal pieces in practice, I think using a large portion of photos taken from anywhere is OK. ?
But for client work or anything that I am turning in professionally, I stick to mainly my own references because photography is art too. ?
Don't forget and we don't want to take someone else's hard work for ourselves. Of course, these would be for situations where you're using a heavy amount of the photo, perhaps around seventy percent or more. But if you're just taking like a tiny pebble from the corner of someone's photo, that no one's gonna care,?
at least of all mother nature.?
But in this case, one of the buildings that I’m using is very similar to the photograph I’m sticking with photos that I have been given full permission to use in any way that I’d like.?
for this piece, I think I’m really going to enjoy drawing a cute little angel just strolling alongside the train tracks with her little suitcase.?

Maybe she's going somewhere, or maybe she's just gotten off the train and was in a suitcase.?
I don't know, but I love the mystery of it. And at this point I have basically abandoned my reference as I am simply using my intuition.?
And the first thing I do with my intuition is change the color.?
Because what is the point of me as an artist? If I simply copy the photograph after all, my job should be to make the painting more enticing the real life.?
Therefore I start adding all these crazy colors like a pastel pink.?
or a mint green for the windows and doors.?
It's still very similar to my original reference,?
but I just changed it up a little bit. Now as I'm repainting these buildings,?
I use my soft rectangular brush tool.?
And you will see that there is a slight bit of texture on the pink walls.?
And a green little archway thinking is right underneath the roof. ?
While it is off screen, I still do have the original photo reference above me.?
And rather than look at it for the colors or for the composition, I'm now only looking at it to inform myself of how to shade this piece instead.?
So the reference image will tell me where I should add the shadows, how heavy of a shadow I should add.?
And you'll also notice that I added this small ambient occlusion to anything that is supposed to stick out this tiny little line.?
and this dark little light does wonders. I tell you, to make your piece to feel more realistic. Just give it a shot next time.?
If you have anything that supposed to be touching like a window against a wall,?
add a small little line of ambient occlusion and you will see a world of difference. ?
For the shrubbery, I am using my hairy Minnesota brush.?
And I'm also using that same brush more and more towards the overall treatment of my buildings.?
You can see that slowly with every single layer of paint that I put on to the buildings, they get more and more tooth into the texture.?
very different compared to how naked it was in the very beginning when I simply use a lasso tool and the hard round brush tool,?
I'm telling you, Hairy Minnesota works on basically everything.?
And again I'm using Hairy Minnesota coupled with a little bit of the oil painting brush to add more shrubs and bushes and adding shrubs wherever the buildings are close to each other,?
just so that I can differentiate those buildings apart.?
So that so it seems like there's a little bit of a gap in between these buildings.?
And so to the sidewalk does it feel too empty.?
Basically a decorative weed and shrubbery.?
A common question I get from my speed paintings is how do you exactly choose the color.?
now for this because I'm speed painting and I'm trying to go as fast as I can.?
I'm not really using reference Instead, I am pulling from what I like instinctively,?
recently i've been absolutely loving pastel color palette.?
And so I try to bring a little bit of that same flavor into this painting here.?
This is something that you'll develop with time.?
You'll develop your own tastes.?
And there will also be times when you really want to use dark colors.?
So you use dark colors. And there will be other times when you want to use super bright, peppy neon colors.?
Speed painting is all about trying to go and reach inside of yourself and seeing what colors that you gravitate towards to the most. ?
And if you don't want to do that, if you want to do something that's very accurate and something that works really well, then you already know the answer. Just find a good piece of reference like we've been doing this entire time.?
I'm a little bit sick of using reference at this point. I just wanna draw something that makes me feel really happy and feel really bright.?
So I'm completely ignoring the reference throwing it out the window and just put it in colors that I think work together.?
If that doesn't work for you, then you don't need to do that kind of method. The most foolproof way would be to use reference, just so you know, ?
now we’re zooming in and trying our little Angel, I struggled a little bit to figure out what color I want her dress to be.?
At first I thought I wanted to be white, but the problem with the white dress is that it blends in too much with the background.?
So to make sure that she can still stand out, because she's the main focus point.?
I changed her dress to this bright sunflower yellow.?
Not only does the yellow color allow her to pop out against the green of the door,?
but I do think it adds a very nice little pop of sunshine bright happy color.?
Because whenever I think of yellow I think of friendship and happiness and some flowers.?
like I said, yes, yellow can also mean danger. But in this case because it's a cute little yellow dress, you don't feel danger, you just feel happy.?
And that's what I want someone to feel when they look at this piece. ?
As I start to reach towards the end of this piece, I realized that I didn't add enough lighting.?
So my piece overall has very low contrast.?
And when you have low contrast, everything kind of blends together, because it has the same problem as the movie strange magic,?
where all the colors are just kind of grey. If you turn them into black and white and mix so that nothing stands out.?
Therefore I went in with a multiply layer and I darken in all of the shadows.?
Additionally I used a soft light layer to speckle the right side of the buildings with this holy a little bit of light,?
so that it really makes the left side much darker and really brings the needed contrast.?
Again, all three of these paintings will have the PSD available for you to go in and look through all the things that i've done. ?
Because I'm sure that a lot of times you'll hear me talk about these different layers. But it's a lot more different when you're actually able to look at these layers yourself.?
And really dig in and get your hands on them. So feel Free to download them and check them out. I don't think I need to say anything else about the color Look up and adjustment, but I have to do the very end cause that's basically it. That's what I do to the end of every single piece. ?

And with that, our 3rd speed painting. And to be quite honest, it is going to be our last painting of this entire series. We've gone through so many different paintings throughout the life of this course and I'm so happy to be able to end it on such a bright, happy little painting and has all the aspects of life that I really enjoyed, from bright peppy colors to using photographs that my friends took to that. It feels like my friends are with me on this piece and adding just a cute little Angel who is maybe on a secret mission. I don't know. But now you see me do three speed paintings in front of your eyes. Over all this painting. Also talk a little bit longer. It took around two to three hours because buildings are on the more complex side, just like hands and faces. But it's still done in basically two or three hours. That's still pretty impressive, but I feel that when you make something way too fast, you're also decreasing the quality of it.?
I do want to make sure that I prioritize quality over just simply rushing through it. Therefore for me for now two to three hours is my sweet spot for a speed painting. Now take my arm or my virtual arm and let's head into our recap and discuss what we've learned so far. And then of course, figure out what your assignment is, that you can do the exact same thing.?
Let's go.?

?
51 Lesson 8 - Speedpainting Part 6 - Recap
P51 - 00:01?
?Today we tackle the speed painting, which while we don't have a dictionary, clear definition can be loosely interpreted as a finished painting done within one to three hours of work.?
The purpose of a speed painting within work is typically to be forms of vast exploration and definitely not to explore the final look of something.?
So definitely not a key frame because it is focused on speed. A lot of the steps that we went through in our previous paintings like carefully planning out a mini black and white thumbnail to determine values are skipped over.?
And we rely on our intuition instead to tackle things like composition colored and values almost instantly.?
This is also why I propose that speed paintings can really only be at a 30% completion level of what your normal paintings look like.?
for the foundations necessary for a speed painting come from doing your typical painting is constantly and eventually you'll start to develop an almost intuition level of execution.?
Allow you to make decisions almost instantly.?
This is also the episode where I went over brushes, everyone's favorite portion.?
I go over which brushes I use specifically for what task. And I am an advocate for both sides of the argument for brushes. Brushes are only a tool, not a wholly excalibur, that will instantly make a painting great. ?
But in the nature of the tool, if you're using the right tool for something, everything will look much better and be faster.?
Don't forget, only good cooks will truly be able to wield the best ingredients and equipment properly to bring out their full potential.?
So if you had to choose between the skill level and a good brush, I would definitely go for skill level.?
And also these are just my brushes. If you have something that you like that you are currently using, by all means please use it.?
You do not need to use any of my brushes. You are completely able to do a speed painting without any of my brushes.?
In fact, there are definitely brushes out there that are better than mine. And now we dive in and I demonstrate how to paint not one, not two but three speed paintings, each tackling something different.?
with Cinderella. I explained the most foolproof method of drawing a human is just asking a human to pose for you.?
Yes. Artists should learn anatomy, but when you only have two hours to deliver a painting to your director, I just saved you five years of studying anatomy.?
This is a foolproof class after all. As we paint and chat, I go over which specific brushes I use for each part and explain that areas like the hands and face will inevitably take more time because they need that extra care and attention.?
Then we head to the forest where I am now sent you a few more photos from the beginning based tackling an altarpiece composition with a little fox adventure.?
I noticed that I haven't been drawing anything green. So this is a nice opportunity to take advantage of the fact that tackle some lush mossy forest locations.?
I also intentionally want a little bit of story to go with this painting and make the sword. This sort of mangled root like texture and material. to match the roots of the tree. And I'm having these routes just crawl across the rocks, make it feel like it's being ingrained into the heart of the forest.?
And I finish this piece off with some field blur. God raised, colour dodge the color look up, and the selective color.?
right after that without missing a beat, we head into our first perspective exterior demo.?
And our final painting which is a little Angel at a train stop in Europe.?
to keep things fast. I rely on the photo a little more heavily. And all the photos used in this piece were given to me from a friend who has studied abroad in Europe from his personal collection, i bash in a few different pieces, accordingly to the perspective grid.?
But I changed the colours into something much brighter and also more pastel because I don't want to just copy the photograph. I want to make this piece my own.?
as always after using only like 3 of my 10 brushes. I finish the piece off with the standard color lookup and selective color.?
And I now have three different speed paints, all done from scratch for you to see pieces that I created specifically for this course in order to demonstrate different aspects. And that's it. We’ve done it.?
this is the last recap that will cover overall paintings. You've gotten to the 8th module and you deserve a break, from long paintings that is, because now I'm going to push you into creating fast paintings. And I can courage you to really experiment this module.?
Let's find out more at the practice and improvement section for this lesson.?

?
52 Lesson 8 - Speedpainting Part 7 - Practice & Improvement
P52 - 00:01?
?And now for your second to last assignment. we made it all the way here. But all right, your second to last assignment is going to be little red riding hood and Cinderella. No, I'm joking. Oh, my goodness! I would never you're done. Okay, no more, but you don't have to look at those two images ever again, I promise. However, you can probably guess what I'm gonna ask for the homework to be. You saw me at do three different speed paintings. Therefore, I ask you to also deliver me at least three different speed paintings.?
And actually to be quite honest, I would say go for a minimum of three speed paintings, I would like you to try between vertical and horizontal pieces, especially if you haven't tried them before.?
Try a natural setting. So like nature and then try things with perspective.?
So whether an interior or exterior with buildings, try different compositions and I would like for you to actually shoot and aim for five.?
the reason why is because the speed painting and especially with speed painting. the best way to get better at this stuff as a try try and try and try.?
I want you to look at these speed paintings and understand that i've been doing speed paintings for quite a while. In fact I honestly enjoy speed painting far more than basically any other form of painting.?
I like things that are fast and these are all pretty simple subject matters, that I am very comfortable with. Therefore if you are just starting out or you don't have that much experience with speed painting don't expect your speed paintings to look just like mine, in the same amount of time. ?
I want you to ask yourself what is fast for you yourself and try to aim for a painting within that time.?
It doesn't need to be this polished. It doesn't need to be this finished. Your first speed painting is probably going to be a little bit half hazard. ?
And in the second painting, you get the hang of it. And then the 3rd painting, you'll basically be getting into a groove.?
And then you go into your 4th and 5th, I want you to try different techniques for each of these paintings to push yourself and have fun.?
Don't worry about the finish the fidelity, obviously because I'm trying to teach something here. So I have to make sure the fidelity is some kind of degree, but you don't need to worry about that.?
I above all want you to try different techniques and try to push for speed and have fun just pushing paint around. That being said, please don't submit to me. Something is completely unfinished. The entire point of a speed painting is a turn in something that looks characteristically unfinished, but has a nice charm to it, but is ultimately supposed to be well finished.?
I would honestly much rather than you submit to me one really, really good painting to instead submit a bunch of kind of crappier paintings,?
because that's where improvements sprouts.?
The more you fail, the more you fall down, the more you'll get up, the more that you add to your growing visual library.?
So that soon a lot of this stuff will also be in your comfort zone as well.?
And you'll be able to whip these up and probably less time than I do. And that's my only wish is that one day you will surpass me in terms of both speed and ability. But it won't be easy because I will continue to practice myself as well. So let's all work hard together. And I very much look forward to what you are going to come up with this week. I think that this is probably going to be the most fun week unless you absolutely detest speed painting.?

In that case, I hope that in these five paintings you'll find some love for pushing paint around in the best way possible.
