India has always been lagging in the wireless technologyadoption, when compared to the rest of the world. 3G services got launched inIndia in 2008, nearly 6 years after it was launched in countries like US andJapan. India was quick enough to jump into the 4G bandwagon - 4G mobileservices were launched in India in 2014, roughly 4 years since it was launchedin countries like US. The ubiquity of 4G services in metros paved the way formass adoption of smartphones and growth of services such as Ola, Swiggy andPayTM. Globally, there is a lot of expectations around 5G use cases and India isn't an exception. Thearticle will provide details on the preparedness of the government, serviceproviders and the technology vendors for the launchof 5G services in India.
When is the government auctioning the 5G spectrum?
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has started theprocess for auctioning the 5G spectrum in India. The auction will happen duringthe 2nd half of 2019.
The government published its NationalDigital Communications Policy 2018and also allocated 5 billion Indian rupees ($77 million) to 5Gdevelopment - parts of this fund will go towards setting up labs around thecountry and involve researchers, students and teachers from the five IndianInstitutes of Technology (IIT). Ericsson ispartnering with IITs to setup this infrastructure, as part of the"5G for India" program.
Do the service providers in India have the money for 5G launch?
The launch of 5G in India would require several billions ofdollars investment for building the infrastructure and to acquire the spectrum.Do the service providers in India have so much cash in hand or do they have themuscle to get into additional debt to fund their 5G dreams? That's a bigquestion that the service providers have to answer.
Since the launch of Reliance Jio services in 2016, telecomsector has been under stress - there is mounting debts on one side and Jio'slow cost Internet services have left a huge dent on other service providers'profitability. Cellular Operators' Association of India (COAI), in its annual report for FY18, has noted that the telecomoperators are in severe financial distress with a cumulative debt of Rs 7.7lakh crore.
To top it off, there is a huge consolidation happening in theindustry - Aircel went bankrupt; Reliance Communications sold its wirelessinfrastructure assets to Reliance Jio; Tata Teleservices and Telenor sold theirassets to Airtel; Vodafone and Idea Cellular merged to form Vodafone IdeaLimited. Now, the fight is between Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, Reliance Jioand BSNL.
In December 2018, these service providers along with the networkequipment vendors such as Huawei, Samsung, Ericsson and Nokia approached theDepartment of Telecommunications (DOT) to conduct 5G trials in multiple partsof the country.
What is the status of 5G trials in India?
Verizon and AT&T in US have already launched 5G services.Several operators across the globe have kick startedtheir 5G deployment journey. In India, 5G trials are in progress.
Anil Jain, BSNL Chief General Manager said BSNL is learning and testing 5Gtechnology on theground by signing agreement with several vendors such as Nokia, NTT AdvncedTechnology.
Bharti Airtel, one of the largest service providers in India,did some 5G trials with Huawei equipment in 2018, at its Network ExperienceCenter in Gurugram. Airtel claims to have achieved speeds of 3 Gbit/s in the 5Gtest trial.
Reliance Jio partnered with Ericsson to showcasesome 5G demos in the recently conducted (Oct 2018) India Mobile Congress event- Jointly, they show cased 5G connected car and Virtual Reality enabled drivingusing 5G.
Vodafone Idea is upgrading itsnetwork infrastructure for 5G launch readiness. Vodafone CTO said the companyis developing its 4G network on the basis of elements of 5G architecture and 60percent of all traffic is currently running on cloud core.
What is the status of 5G mobile phones in India?
Though 5G technology isn'tbeing looked at powering the mobile devices as part of the initial launch,several vendors are competing to add 5G supportto their mobile phones. Qualcomm announced that its Snapdragon 855chipset will have the 5G support. Qualcomm is partnering with companies likeASUS, Google, Samsung, HMD Global, OnePlus, Motorola, Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo andXiaomi to launch 5G phones in 2019.
Mobile phones such as OnePlus 7, Samsung Galaxy S10, and GoogleNexus 4, will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset, with 5G support.
Apple is dependant on Intel's hardware for the 5G launch. Intelis expected to make its XMM 8160 5G modem available during the 2nd half of2019. And hence, Apple's iPhone support for 5G may get delayed to 2020.

What are the 5G use cases that are relevant for India?
In India, the 5G launch will immensely help in the deployment/adoptionof Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) services in public places such as railwaystations, airports and even in trains/buses. The launch of fixed wirelessservices would help the service providers to cut down their operational costsin providing broadband services. Virtual Reality / Augmented Reality relateduse cases may gain popularity among the youngsters. Use cases such as SmartCars are still far away for adoption in India. However, with the government'spush on Smart Cities, some of the IOT related use cases would get benefited bythe 5G launch.
When will the 5G services be launched in India?
5G services in India are going to be launched as late as 2021 orin 2022. TRAI Secretary said in a recent CII event that "The telecomsector will move to 5G by 2022 and access to digital platform will becomehighly advanced in the next five years".

just a year back 4G services from jio toppled many operatorsrunning with 3G and 2G services and, investment to upgrade was very heavy, andtelecom industry is depth ridden at ?450 billions.
Getting 5G into market will kill all telecom operators, beforethat 5G enabled mobiles are not yet out definetely no one will allow 5G into Indiafor now. The competition is so unhealthy to even sustain.
Most telecom companies are running in losses to catch withmarkets. Their biggest losses are bank interest which is so high to think new.Other losses are zero call cost and very low cost data packs where mostcompanies earn profit. They also need to re consider what is extra burden toupdate to 5G.
Earlier 1GB per month was ?98 lowest collected by BSNL, now itis 1.5 GB free per day at a meager cost of 150/ month worser all calls arefree.
Forget 5G for another year.

In a country where 4G gets you speeds of 10mbps I reckon askingfor 5G at this stage is futile. Nevertheless I guess 5G will start coming toIndia in 2023-2025 if adoption rates are similar to 4G and I guess 5G will bemainstream by 2028 I.e when the world will be contemplating 6g.
My comments may appear harsh but in a countrywhere even 3G has not reached its peak potential and 4G still not widespread Iguess we will truly have to wait a lot for 5G, may be even more than 4G and Iguess when 5G will first come only then we will experience peak 4G speeds?

Faced with atypically slow 4G cellular networks,India has takenits first step towards higher speed 5G service as Bharti Airtel and Huawei havecompleted India's first 5G network trial.
5G test speed was found to be a whooping 3Gbps andapproximately 1 millisecond latency on 3.5 GHz band.
Whereas,Indian customers get 4G speeds of only 6.07Mbps - 10Mbpswhich is lower than the global average.

The transition to 5G from 4Gcould happen much faster compared to the switch from 3G to 4G services.
Indian government has NOTallocated airwaves for 5G once 5G airwaves(spectrum) is allocated then the racewill begin between Jio, Airtel, and Vodaphone-idea.
The government recently said itplans to allocate airwaves to offer 5G services – which can support downloadspeeds 50 to 60 times faster than 4G – by end of 2019.
If sources are to be believedthen JIO can have a fully operational 5G network within 6 months of airwavesallocation. so India should get 5G by 2020.
Considering the scale of theproject you can add 6 to 12 months, as these projects are prone todelays. so by 2021, we should definitely have 5G. (figures crossed)

Technology is Invented butthe miniature 5g band supported IC's are yet to be built, which we can see soonand will have that thing in hands in the coming years.As there are researchgroups working in Europe, Japan, China, USA, Korea to propose standards andspecifications for future 5G devices and technology. As per the plans of Governmentand telecom companies, India will get 5G much sooner, probably by 2020 or late2019.
Telecom giant Airtel and Huaweihave conducted the first trial of 5G in India at network experience centre inManesar, Gurgaon.
During the test trial, a userthroughput of more than 3 GBPS was achieved using the setup. This is thehighest measured throughput for a mobile network in 3.5 GHz band with 100 MHzbandwidth and end-to-end network latency of approximately 1 msec.
We hope to see the superfast 5Gservices as early as possible.

As and when 5G services are available for subscription in thecountry. To achieve this 5G services should be declared by DoT and bids forbandwidth are invited and won by prospective telecom operators in the country.They have to have a 5G compatible network so as to distribute in the country inevery state in urban areas. As of now, 5G services are under trial and atdifferent stages of testing. It may take an or even more for that to becommercially available for the public. India is poised to become the first fewcountries that may offer 5G services. Jio as of now claim that their network iseasily upgradable to future technology services including 5G and as such Jio ifthey win the bidding process would offer it to the public as a first serviceprovider. Other service providers may also offer this service to the public abit later. 5G phones capable of very high speed data transfer technology areyet to be manufactured by any Mobile company as of now. Hope the scenario willchange in an year or 18 months dramatically so as to be ready for 5G servicesaround the world. The first line up if 5G services are probably China, Japan,US, some European countries, South Korea, India etc as per guesswork.

Telecom firms are bleeding by aggressive marketing campaigns byJio no growth of internet users from over 450 million since Dec., 2016 justadded 20 million in more than a year.
The committee, headed by Stanford University Professor A JPaulraj, was formed in September last year to formulate a road map for 5G inIndia. “By acting early to embrace the 5G opportunity, India canaccelerate the 5G dividend and potentially also become an innovator in 5Gapplications,” the panel said in its report submitted to the government.

印度電信聯(lián)盟秘書長古普塔6月12日表示，到2022年，電信行業(yè)將向5G轉(zhuǎn)移，未來5年，數(shù)字平臺的接入將變得非常先進(jìn)。
必須有偉大的計劃，但5G智庫發(fā)展緩慢，需要大量外國直接投資。

BSNL Plans to Launch 5G Much Before Reliance Jio, Airtel inIndia; Roll Out Expected in 2019
The government telecom body of the nation, BharatSanchar Nigam Limited(BSNL), promises to launch its own 5G servicesin the country in parallel with a global launch of 5G. the company assures thatthe moment 5G service gets launched in any place of the world, the same time 5Gwill be launched in India as well. So was said by Anil Jain, Chief GeneralManager of BSNL.

Further, the Chief General Manager of BSNL, Anil Jain, wassaid that nobody will release the nascent advancement of 5G services in thecountry before BSNL. On asking about the release date or timeline, the managerdecided not to spill more beans and answered that he cannot give any suchtimelines, as of now. However, he gave a positive ray of hope by saying thateven people expect 5G services to knock their door only by June 2020, thecompany can make a surprise launch as soon as in 2019 itself. He further addedthe company has missed the opportunity to establish itself as a 4G provider inthe country, and now, it does not want to miss getting its hands over 5Gservice launch.
BSNL 5G Technology:
Also, Anil Jain noted that 5G launching across the country mayneed a lot of study and explorations. Therefore, BSNL has taken abig step forward in the initiation 5G services and equipping and enrichingitself to give away 5G services. On this note, Jain said that BSNL has signedagreements with international operators, such as NTT advance technology, Nokia,etc. to learn and test the service on the ground and for making the alreadyavailable system compatible enough to carry 5G configuration. He also statedthat many recommendations are coming in the way for 5G services. However, BSNL with thehelp of international companies mentioned above is working for launching itsown home network with 5G service. Testing and working of the 5G services byBSNL is under process.
Anil Jain also stated that this testing of 5G services is nowoccurring across various places in the world. In countries such as India,Germany, the United States, and China, the test for 5G services have alreadybeen started. Also, it is believed by the officials of BSNL that once when theWings is rolled out that commences its operation in the country from August 1,the mobile network provider will get 50 lakh new customers by the end of thefinancial year.
Earlier the Chief General Manager announced manypromotional plans for its landline, broadband, and fiber to the home services.Now, with much hopes rested on that, he stated that “with these new offers weare hopeful to add 15 lakh new customers for landline and broadband connectionsagainst the current customer base of 60 lakh while we are expecting to add 30lakh more for fiber broadband from the existing 2.3 lakh fiber connectionspan-India by March 2019”.
