11 Lesson 2 - Crash Course Composition Part 5 - Practice & Improvement
P11 - 00:00?
hello and welcome to your second practice and improvement. And now we're going to continue doing this week of work in black and white so that we can build on Top of what we learned last week.?
And similar to last week, we're going to do a bit of a quiz as well. You'll be able to find all the answers included in your week to deliverables.?
So I want you to look at some of the films i've listed out, and they'll be in your worksheet, but I'm going to put them up here really quickly, so you can get a sneak peek about what's going to come and hear the shots that i'd like you to look at.?
And I want you to tell me what composition is it? What ratio or ratios plural can you find??
Then I would like you to do a black and white study in the same three color method that we did for last week. ?
So let's quickly do one together. So you have an example. this shot is from the movie pride and prejudice. One of my favorite movies, by the way.?
And it would be classified as an arrival shot.?
This is because the scene is mostly environment based and its purpose is to show off the gorgeous location that the character is surrounded by. You can tell this without even knowing the movie, because the character is just so much smaller compared to the environment.?
This scene is obviously focused on the environment and not the character. ?
When it comes to ratios, I immediately single out the horizon line, which is at a kind of a 1/3 2/3, roughly there. I tried to find a vertical alignment too. And our main character rests also on a very rough 1/3, 2/3, kind of like that.?
So the dotted line, the blue dotted line is where the character is. But the blue line is kind of more accurate to wear 1/3. 2/3 would actually be.?
now in the actual movie, this scene would be moving. so she would be able to sit perfectly on that 1/3 2/3rd line.?
If the shot were just from like a few seconds later. So she really is very well suited to be in the one third 2/3 position.?
So those are the different ratios that I find in the movie. Now I would create a grayscale study and take it into the three values.?
So I continue to learn how to differentiate my black and white values.?
And as a bonus, this isn't required, but at least you should think about it.?
If I had to choose between local value and shadow value, this piece would be mainly based on shadow values. So Chiaroscuro.?
Again, optional. But it would be very happy if you did it, just saying, you know, all right, so those are the five film studies that would be item number one, which is the stuff.?
The second part is to create some compositions of your own.?
And it's time to get really creative. So I'm gonna have to choose between two stories, little red riding hood or Cinderella,?
if you don't know either of these two stories there very famous. And so they're very easy to Google.?
And there are great classic stories and you ll enjoy them and finish it in 10 minutes or less. ?
This is because these two stories have very easy to recognize story beats.?
And you're going to recreate the five compositions we talked about in this module, yourself.?
again in black and white,?
for example. Now let me just quickly whip up a few that you know story beats which are going to be very rushed.?
But let's, for example, take in little red riding hood. The arrival shot could be little red coming to grandma's house.?
Again. This is all meant to be on the much more simple side that would I expect your homework to be, but regardless the next shot the big versus small is when the wolf.?
first meets a little red and we see how big he is. And then the altarpiece composition as an example could be the pretty flower that red wants to go and pick.?
Another hiding from and spying on is when red is looking at the wolf through the door.?
And she sees him kind of just resting in the bed acting as a grandma. ?
And then finally the close up is red horrified face before she gets eaten by the wolf.?
This is just an example of what these five different compositions could be within a single story.?
There is all kinds of different story beats that you can choose from.?
This is not the one way to do it. The story is super simple, but that allows for so much more creativity.?
So I really want you to go into it and kind of figure out your own compositions and do it in two game. Well, please a much better version than this.?
When you draw these, think about where you want your ratio lines to be.?
And because this exercise is mainly based on composition, I do want you to incorporate some line art as well.?
So that we can actually tell what is happening in your scenes.?
And use only three values of black and white to back yourself up.?
So I expect a polish more similar to a level of your typical black and white studies.?
And if you feel ambitious, you can make your pieces much more finished and polished.?
These compositions should be understandable above all else, and feel like something that you could actually turn into an art director, try to make some really crazy compositions.?
I want you to really try and evoke a feeling when you do this, like go through some crazy angles, place your camera super high or place its super low.?
Pretend you're in the scene and you are the camera and you want your audience to feel something.?
regardless though I cannot wait to see what you guys come up with. After that, you will be equipped to tackle the next piece of our painting puzzle. See you then.

05 Lesson 1 - Values Part 5 - Recap
P5 - 00:01?
?Through the first lesson that wasn't so bad, was it? Now let's take a quick moment to go over everything that we've learned in the module is so far.?
If you're anything like me, I have an incredibly low attention span. Sometimes things just go in one ear through the other ear.?
So I always appreciate it when someone can repeat a concept for me. Or sometimes I will definitely raise my hand in class and ask a teacher, can you repeat what you just said, Even though I know that you totally said it like 10 minutes ago.?
So I'm totally there with you. If you're that kind of person. First we learned what concept art is. It's simply put clear visual communication.?
Next we went over the general outline of this course. We're going to start off with black and white and then go into composition, then light and color, then painting techniques. And lastly, go into speed painting.?
We then jumped right back into the lecture for black and white. Black and white is incredibly important for us artists,?
because number one, that's usually what is asked first in the process. We deliver black and white sketches and thumbnails before going into the final color.?
But more importantly, number two, it makes our art understandable. If artwork does not look good in black and white, no amount of color will ever make it look nice.?
We can categorize black and white into two categories, Notan and Chiaroscuro, or as we call it, local value versus shadow values.?
It's a way for us to kind of categorize the way that we put black and whites on the page. Most paintings usually Lean towards one or the other.?
So decide which way you prefer your painting to Lean towards.?
Lastly, we learned that we need to train our eyes. Knowing and seeing other great artworks will set a benchmark in standard for ourselves.?
Now let's finish this module off with a small demo and your first homework assignment.?
But don't worry, I promise that it's not going to be painful.?
