What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Sitting down to a leisurely conversation in an English tearoom with my wife, a friend, or even an interesting stranger. Good cake is essential.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?

The urge to be unpleasant to waitstaff in restaurants.

What is your most treasured possession?

My 1986 Martin HD28 acoustic guitar, despite its two big cracks and a top string that always buzzes.

What is your current state of mind?

Jet-lagged, fogged out, but hungry to dream up a new novel or movie idea.A guide to Hollywood’s biggest races。

What is your greatest regret?

Not keeping up my Japanese after leaving Japan at age five. It would be wonderful to watch the great Japanese films without subtitles.

On what occasions do you lie?

When someone asks me to guess how old they are.

What do you dislike about your appearance?

These days, I’ve noticed one side of my face looks much worse than the other. If they were more equal, even if both were bad, life would be much simpler and more balanced.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

My wife, Lorna. My daughter, Naomi. Literature, movies, popular music.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Our marriage—37 years and counting.?

Which talent would you most like to have?

I’d love to play jazz piano in the style of Bill Evans or Keith Jarrett.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I always dreamt of having a second stomach I could carry around in a bag, which I could attach to my real stomach when I sat down in restaurants. That way, I could eat a huge amount, never gaining weight.

Who are your favorite writers?

Dostoyevsky, Kafka, Charlotte Bront?, Jane Austen. From our own era, Murakami, Cormac McCarthy, Gabriel García Márquez. Elizabeth Strout and Mariana Enriquez are both important recent discoveries for me.

Where would you like to live?

If we had to move, Vienna would be okay for me. Their cafés are wonderful and you can hang out in them for hours without anyone coming to give you a hard time.

Who is your favorite hero of fiction?

Sherlock Holmes in books. Lieutenant Columbo on TV.

What are your favorite names?

I like ones with a place name as the given name: Indiana Jones, Minnesota Fats, Shanghai Lily. That said, it’s hard to beat “Big Bill Broonzy.”

Who are your heroes in real life?

Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Gillian Welch, Leonard Cohen. For my generation, Nelson Mandela laid down the supreme example not only of how to fight for a better world, but how to rule with justice and decency.

What is it that you most dislike?

Dental floss containers that are opaque, so the floss runs out on you without warning just when you most need it.

How would you like to die?

Like Joel McCrea’s character at the end of the movie?Ride the High Country.?(He says something about “entering his house justified,” sits up to take a last look at the scenery, then rolls contentedly out of the frame.) Or like Bill Nighy’s character at the end of our film?Living.
