So for a young person who is trying to figure out how they would pursue this career path even though not many people look like them.?

所以對(duì)于一個(gè)年輕人來(lái)說(shuō)，該如何試圖找出追求這個(gè)職業(yè)道路，盡管沒(méi)有多少人跟他們相似。

And it's worth it, I think to stick to your dream, even if it means you're more paying it forward than paying it back.

For people who don’t see themselves represented in mainstream science, so that would be woman and people from underrepresented minority background.

針對(duì)那些在主流科學(xué)中看不到自己領(lǐng)域里具有代表性的人，比如女性和來(lái)自少數(shù)族裔背景的人。

For those folks, first of all I will say when I was young, I did not see myself represented. I did not see woman, successful woman scientists who were decades older than me.They’re just weren’t enough for me to find them.?

對(duì)于這些人，我要說(shuō)的是，首先，當(dāng)我年輕的時(shí)候，我并沒(méi)有看到自己的行業(yè)具有代表性的人。我沒(méi)有看到比我年長(zhǎng)幾十年的成功的女性科學(xué)家。她們實(shí)在太少了，以至于我都找不到她們。

So I know what it feels like to feel like you could never belong in a place. And then what happened was a few people here and there opened the doors for me.?

And I had the great benefit of being born into a family where science was encouraged. So I didn't grow up thinking I couldn't be a scientist. It was only later that I worried about whether I would find my way.?

I will say first of all, now that we live in a globally connected world, where people can get on the internet and find information they couldn't have found in their backyard.?

You can find the role models you're looking for. They are out there. You just might have to look a little harder than the room you walk into.

So take the time to look online and do your research and find out who are the scientists that remind you of yourself.?

They're definitely there.

Second of all, find your advocates. Somewhere along the way, all of us had a handful of people who stood up for us. And if you can find a few of those people, they might be family members, they might be school teachers, maybe a neighbor even or maybe someone they meet at an event.

If you can find just a few people that can really help your confidence, I think.?

And then finally, as hard as it might feel to break into an environment where you feel you don't belong, there will be a chance for you to pay it forward.

And you might not find a lot of people in your own generation, but if you pay it forward, they'll be a next generation that follows you that will be larger, more robust and more energized.

也許你的同代人中沒(méi)有太多這樣的人，但如果你先付出，下一代人就會(huì)繼承你的經(jīng)驗(yàn)，這樣的意義會(huì)更大、更穩(wěn)固、更有活能量。

And it's worth it, I think to stick to your dream, even if it means you're more paying it forward than paying it back.
