Luminaire classification
Emergency lighting luminaires shall be classified and marked in accordance with their construction,
as follows:
A unique designation denoting the type, mode of operation, the facilities included and the rated
duration of operation of the luminaire shall be affixed to the luminaire in a conspicuous position.
The designation shall consist of a rectangle divided into three or four segments each containing one
or more symbols. Relevant to the construction of the designation, each symbol in a segment shall
indicate a letter or a figure or a point of no indication.
The shape of the emergency lighting luminaire designation shall be as follows:
* * **** ***
The segments and symbols shall be completed by letters and figures that indicate the construction
of a luminaire.
a) The first segment shall contain one symbol that indicates TYPE, i.e.
X: self-contained, or
Z: central supply.
b) The second segment shall contain one symbol that indicates MODE OF OPERATION, i.e.
0: non-maintained, or
1: maintained, or
2: combined non-maintained, or
3: combined maintained, or
4: compound non-maintained, or
5: compound maintained, or

B: including remote rest mode,
C: including inhibiting mode, and
D: high-risk task-area luminaire.
d) The fourth segment shall contain three symbols for SELF-CONTAINED LUMINAIRES to indicate
the rated duration of operation, expressed in minutes, as follows:
*10: 10 min duration;
*60: 1 h duration;
120: 2 h duration; and
180: 3 h duration
The following examples show how marking should be composed.
Example 1: X 1 *B*D *60
Example 1 indicates a self-contained, maintained luminaire that includes a remote rest mode,
which is suitable for a high-risk task-area and has an emergency mode duration of 60 min.
Example 2: Z 1 *****
Example 2 indicates a centrally supplied, maintained luminaire.
