If you’re a middle-class Mongolian who is living in Ulaanbaatar, your life won’t be that different from any of the modern city dwellers from other countries.
You live in an apartment and work as a teacher/doctor/engineer/programmer/nurse/clerk/designer/reception/waitress/ salesperson/journalist etc. Most of the professionals have monthly income of 300–500$. Traveling abroad is expensive for most, so there are people who have never been abroad. Average people usually travel abroad only few times in their entire life. Mostly people spend their summer vacation in the countryside or in their wooden summer houses, which are located about 1 hour drive away from the city. Young Mongolians have a fair chance of studying abroad. (usually on a scholarship).

Let me just state some facts. More than half of private businesses have gone bankrupt since 2012 and most of them are in debt of over $20,000 and our average annual salary is less than $2,000.Due to recent climate changes Zud’s started happening a lot frequently now. So it’s become extremely hard to live the life of a simple herder in the countryside.
Quite a few of our key politicians have been proven to be corrupt and has millions to billions of dollars in an offshore account. And the worst part is they’re pardoning themselves and passing laws that protects themselves which is kinda frustrating. There was an election last year. And most of our citizens were confused. Everyone they wanted to vote for has proven themselves to be corrupt. So we just kinda voted for the lesser of two evils. We rely a lot on our livestock. But our country doesn’t have a system to tax herders. Our tax system is pretty much shit.
Now is it hard to live in Mongolia? Yes. Yes it is. Programmers get payed $200-$400 monthly. And there’s corruption everywhere. Even in small government organizations and public hospitals there’s corruption. Can you f*cking believe that? There’s corruption in public hospitals! That’s how corrupt our country is. That’s how f*cked our country is. We desperately need new, competent and smart leadership. Heck! We’ll even accept Trump! Send us Trump if he’s not useful enough for you guys!

It seems like some foreigners, imagine Mongolia to be very hard place to live. And some even creatively imagine that Mongolians are hardened people without real observation or direct interaction.
Life can be hard like anywhere else.
It’s actually less harder than most of the rest of the world. In Mongolia, everybody has accessibility to free education and decent health care.
Mongolia has one of least violent rates in the world.
No shootings, no ethnic/race tension, no war, no gang violence, no drug related serious problems (unlike the USA.)
Mongolia has almost no climate related deaths (unlike the USA) there is no hurricanes, no tornado, no tsunami, no death causing earth quakes, no major fire.
There has never been famine in the history of Mongolia.
Life is hard, but no worse than the rest of the world.

It’s not entirely hard for everyone, but in general, I think it’s pretty hard. You often see people having trouble buying things or paying for services, or hobos in the streets. Some people get depressed about their income that they become alcoholic, which only requires more money. The way I see it, or at least the way I heard, life would’ve been so much better if the government authorities didn’t get too many loans and indulge in corruption. The economy is probably going to get even worse if we keep on going at this rate.
